Beckermet Women ’s Institute began in 1926, and for 80 years has been part of the National and International organisation.
We meet once a month with a speaker, chosen from wide variety of topics suggested by members. The Committee take turns to do the refreshments and thank the speaker. We have a competition that runs with the visiting speakers, where by the speaker chooses their 3 refreshment preferences.
We support our local school, helping the children to knit the latest thing and hold a stall at the Village Sports Day. At Christmas time we help fill poor children overseas parcels, which are taken to a collection point.
Visits to local theatres and cinemas are arranged with transport. When possible we go to WI events organised by our County (Cumbria/Cumberland as distinct from Cumbria/Westmorland). Recent events have included 3 members learning how to use Digital Cameras with Workington Camera Club at the Helena Thomson Museum.
Recently the groups President was asked by Cumbria Life ’s editor if she could arrange a display of food for the supplement “Food and Drink”. How proud we all were with the result, with five members displaying their skills and sharing their recipes, perhaps some of you saw this?
We welcome new members and fresh ideas, after all eighty years and managing to keep going the World War II, our branch of the Women ’s Institute now enjoys sharing in our lives of today.
